Electromagnetic Treatment of Loblolly Pine Seeds — No Effect (Barnett & Krugman 1989)

Key Findings

The USDA Forest Service conducted a multi-year, multi-variable evaluation of the Energy Transfer Corporation’s (ETC) electromagnetic seed treatment process on loblolly pine (Pinus taeda). The “Gray Process” used conveyor-fed seeds exposed to an electromagnetic field at 740 milliamps with vacuum exposure and temperature conditioning (seed temperature brought to 57–70°F). The inventor claimed dramatic improvements including 3-day vs. 7-day germination for pine and up to 1200% yield increases for corn. No independent replication existed at the time of this study.

Two seed lots from Rapides Parish, Louisiana were treated at two temperature protocols (60°AT, 70°AT). Testing covered the full crop lifecycle: germination rate and speed (unstratified and after 28-day cold stratification), seed storability at 1–5 years, seedling development in both containerized and bare-root nursery conditions, and 3-year field survival and height. Statistics used ANOVA with Duncan’s Multiple Range Test at α = 0.05.

Result: no significant effect in any variable, at any time point, for any treatment level. The only anomalous finding — a top dry weight difference in 1980 seedlings — was absent in the 1981 replication. Seedlot identity explained more variation than any treatment.

Scope of this null result: This study specifically refutes the ETC Gray Process as applied to loblolly pine in the late 1970s–1980s. It does not invalidate:

The ETC process had an additional fundamental validity problem: its inventor’s claim that only he could replicate it suggests the treatment was not defined precisely enough to be tested, not that electromagnetic effects on seeds are impossible. This study is best read as a methodological baseline — the evidentiary standard that well-designed studies in this domain should meet.
