Research in Pictures: Rapid Seedling Growth Using Electricity

Two classic photos of electrified seedlings, originally shared in 2013, now properly linked to the real published research they came from.

One of Electric Fertilizer’s earliest “research in pictures” posts, originally shared in November 2013 — republished here with the citation it was always missing.

The photos

The original post shared two images from published plant-electrification research: 5-day-old Vigna mungo (black gram) seedlings, with the top group electrified at 5 volts, and 180-hour-old Zea mays (corn) seedlings, with one side electrified at 3.5 volts. Both showed visibly larger, more developed seedlings on the electrified side compared to the untreated side in the same photo.

The source — now properly cited

These photos came from published research by Tsutomu Takamura: “Electrochemical Potential Around the Plant Root in Relation to Metabolism and Growth Acceleration”. This is a real, citable, peer-reviewed book chapter — Electric Fertilizer did not run this experiment itself; the original 2013 post summarized someone else’s published figures without a direct link to the source, which this page corrects.

Why this matters

This is a good example of a small, fixable evidence-quality issue: republishing someone else’s photos without a real citation makes a legitimate piece of published research look like an unsourced claim. With the citation restored, this is properly attributed secondary coverage of real research — not primary Electric Fertilizer data, but a real, traceable source.
