Mantra recitation and directed intention during plant cultivation may promote germination and early growth.
A controlled germination study found that chanting the Maha Mrtyunjaya mantra 108 times daily produced a +25.6% increase in fenugreek radical length vs. control (p<0.0001). A separate pilot study of direct Reiki healing on finger millet showed a short-term height advantage at 2 weeks that fully disappeared by 6 weeks. The germination result is statistically significant but comes from a single unblinded institution; the growth result is inconsistent across timepoints. Confidence is very low.
Rated very low. The strongest single result — +25.6% fenugreek radical length from mantra chanting (Jang et al. 2016, p<0.0001) — is statistically significant but comes from a non-blinded experiment with a single chanter at one institution (SVYASA), with no independent replication and no identified mechanism. The Reiki/growth pilot (Kumar et al. 2018) showed a significant 2-week result that was entirely absent at 6 weeks, which is more consistent with random variation in a small-n unblinded design than a real treatment effect. The two studies use different crops, different treatments, and different outcome metrics, so they cannot straightforwardly corroborate each other.
Two pilot-level studies have tested whether sound-based or intention-based practices — mantra recitation and Reiki healing — influence plant development metrics.
Mantra on fenugreek germination (Jang, Pan & Kumar 2016): The Maha Mrtyunjaya mantra was chanted 108 times by a single female practitioner at 5:15am and 7pm daily during a 2-day fenugreek germination trial. The mantra treatment group showed +25.6% greater radical length than control (3.45cm vs 2.74cm, p<0.0001), +10.6% fresh weight, and +4.4% dry weight. The authors noted an unusual morphological observation: seed coats remained intact in the mantra group while control seeds showed coat separation. The result is statistically significant, but non-blind — the chanter knew which sample was treatment — and comes from a single institution with no independent replication.
Reiki and mantra on Ragi growth (Kumar, Subramaniyam & Vanishree 2018): Direct Reiki healing, distance Reiki, Vedic mantra chanting, and a water-only control were applied to finger millet (Eleusine coracana) in a pilot study using 16 pots (5 seeds each). At 2 weeks, only direct Reiki produced a significantly greater height than control (+16.6%, p<0.05). At 6 weeks, this advantage had disappeared entirely (direct Reiki plants and control plants were statistically identical). The mantra group had the highest mean at 6 weeks but post-hoc testing was not significant. Yield was not measured — the crop was destroyed by insects and storm.
Assessment: The mantra germination result (Jang 2016) is the stronger of the two, but it requires replication with a blinded design and an additional control for any potential sound frequency/vibration effects independent of semantic meaning. The Reiki growth result (Kumar 2018) is best interpreted as inconclusive. Taken together, the evidence does not warrant more than exploratory interest in this area.
Mechanism: Completely unidentified. Sound vibration from mantra chanting could interact with seed metabolic processes through known physical pathways (acoustic stimulation of enzymes, plasma membrane resonance). Reiki’s proposed non-local energy transmission has no accepted physical basis. The two mechanisms are distinct and should not be conflated.
